Sculpture From Found, Repurposed and Created Objects.

My interest in animals started very early in life.  My father was a small animal veterinarian.  In the early years of his practice, he had a pet store as a client.  They would bring in exotic mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds that my dad would treat for various things.  My father also volunteered his labor to the Youth Science Center which had an animal library.  Children could rent pet rats, guinea pigs and other small mammals, reptiles and amphibians, checking them out for a week or so, just like a library book.

My animals are carved or created from various materials such as wood, metal, foam and epoxy clay. The forms are covered in various fabrics and materials, then placed on or with repurposed objects.  The animals are interacting with the objects or with items I have created to give each sculpture a life of its own.  My jewelry skills allow me to create small detailed items to make each scene more engaging.  Each sculpture invites the viewer into my world of make-believe and tells a story.

Story Time

A bird tells a story to a snail as another bird and insects look and listen.  A vintage book was used as a base for this bird and insect scene.  The two birds were carved, covered with fabric, wire wrapped and rusted.  Willow branches make up their wings and tails. A snail was fabricated from copper and sterling silver.  Two leaves were etched in brass.  A tiny beetle munches on one leaf, while another beetle is approaching a leaf for his meal.  A tiny fly sits at the top of the book cover, watching.  Vintage wheels were attached to the base of the book.  This piece comes with a glass dome and turntable. It measures 10.5”tall x 9”wide x 9”deep. $2200
